The summer school provided the students with opportunities to develop their knowledge of cutting-edge research and technologies via masterclasses with acknowledged experts in their field and to take part in a series of facilitated discussions and fun activities to encourage the social cohesion of the group, networking and pathways to further research.
We were delighted that Professor Sahajwalla, Director of the Centre for Sustainable Materials Research & Technology (SMaRT@UNSW), Professor Koh Chan Ghee, Director of the Lloyd's Register Foundation Institute for the Public Understanding of Risk and Dr Peiyuan Qin from the Global Big Data Technologies Centre gave keynotes.
ICON theme leads Professors Keevil, Nogaret and Wang led interactive sessions in the areas of nanotechnology & risk, sensors and data management.
Know Innovation facilitators, David Lomas and Toby Scott, introduced the students to process that was utilised in combination with the grand challenges identified by the Foundation to develop draft research proposals.
We were also delighted that Jeevarathinam Ravikumar, who heads LR's Global Technology Centre in Singapore focusing on digital transformation and digital innovation, joined us to provide an interesting industrial perspective.

The ICON Conference 2018 featured an interactive session led by Andrew Halfacre, a tour of Foundation offices and inspiring talks by Dr Andrew Hopkins (ARM), Professor Sir Richard Friend (University of Cambridge) and Dr Maria Maragkou (Nature Materials).
The Lloyd’s Register Foundation International Conference, was held on 9th & 10th May 2018 at the IET London, Savoy Place.
The first ICON conference was held in Athens on 7 April 2017.
The Lloyd’s Register Foundation flagship International Conference is a two day event that will bring together our grant holders, public, academia and industry. The conference will feature keynote speakers, presentations and early career 'master classes' spanning all areas of our grants funding. There will also be a presentation session for students. The conference will be held on 13 and 14 October 2016 at the IET London, Savoy Place.
